Artwork by Andrew Au will be on display at the Eva G. Farris Art Gallery at Thomas More College beginning January 14 and running through February 5.
Objects of Worship opens with a reception on January 14 from 4-7 p.m. According to Au, this body of work is an investigation of his fascination with machines, discarding the backgrounds to focus on them as objects, suspended in space.
“Machines can be almost magical, performing functions that might not be readily understood by looking at them. When we are replaced, will Artificial Intelligence find some of our images worth investigating to gain insight into what we were? Am I trying to pander to this future audience?” said Au.
Au’s work is primarily in printmaking, though he has recently been working in sculpture and animation. His work is highly influenced by growing up on science fiction movies and his interest in biology. Creating a conceptual narrative from which to work, Au tackles social and political themes catered to the body of work. His own studio practice and exhibitions inform his teaching of studio foundations at the Middletown campus of Miami University.
Au’s work has been exhibited internationally, nationally, and regionally in universities, galleries, and museums. Noteworthy exhibitions include Nord Art 2010 in Budelsdorf, Germany, 2nd Qijiang International Print Exhibition in Chengdu, China, 14th Tallinn Print Triennial in Tallinn, Estonia, 2011 North American Print Biennial in Framingham, Massachusetts, Primordial, American University in Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Los Angeles Printmakers Society 20th National Print Exhibition in Los Angeles, California, 49th International Award Exhibition, San Diego Art Institute San Diego, California and the Louisiana Biennial at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
