Qualified individuals can get free help preparing taxes from Brighton Center, part of UW collaborative

If you meet income requirements, Brighton Center will help you file your taxes for free through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Those who qualify will make $53,000 or less, be elderly or persons with disabilities.

Certified volunteers will provide the free basic income tax returns and do electronic filing.

Brighton Center is part of the Regional EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit) Collaborative led by United Way of Cincinnati.

Brighton Center will be managing VITA tax preparation programs at the following locations:

Here’s what you should take with you to assure the best service:

* For married filing joint, both spouses must be present
* All Forms W-2 and 1099
* Information for other income
* Information for all deductions/credits
* A copy of last year’s tax return
* Proof of account for direct deposit of refund
* Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification notices/cards for you, your spouse, and/or dependents
* Proof of identification for yourself and/or your spouse
* Total paid to day care provider and their tax ID number
* Birth dates for you, spouse and or dependents on the return
* Proof of foreign status if applying for ITIN
* Forms 1095-A, B or C (Affordable Health Care Statements)
* For prior year or returns, copies of income transcripts from IRS (and state, if applicable)

This service helps residents claim Earned Income Tax Credit benefits and boiled costly tax preparation fees. One in five families are eligible for EITC but do not receive it. In 2015, Brighton Center served 800 households, generating $1,059,590 in tax refunds and saving an estimated $200 per return of $160,000 in total filing fees for customers.
