Ohmer sparks third quarter rally in Scott’s district playoff win 58-52 over Brossart


Senior guard Jake Ohmer scored 14 points during a 22-9 third-quarter rally and Scott knocked off Brossart, 58-52, in the semifinals of the 37th District boys’ basketball tournament on Wednesday at Campbell County Middle School.

Brossart had a 28-17 lead late in the second quarter, but Scott cut it to 30-26 by halftime. After the break, the Eagles surged into the lead with the 22-9 run and stayed on top the rest of the way.

Ohmer finished with 29 points to account for half of his team’s scoring. He’s the leading scorer in Northern Kentucky with a 26.1 average.

Jake Zai, one of seven seniors on the Brossart roster, had 19 points in his final high school game for the Mustangs.

Scott (13-15) will play Campbell County (18-12) in the district final at 7 p.m. Friday and both teams will receive berths in next week’s 10th Region playoffs.  Campbell County whipped Calvary Christian, 84-37, in the other district semifinal game on Wednesday.

ST. HENRY 67, LLOYD 57 — The Crusaders got three of their seven 3-point goals  during a 17-6 run in the second quarter to open up a 34-24 halftime lead in the 34th District semifinal game at Dixie Heights.

After Lloyd cut the margin to 44-37 going into the fourth quarter, St. Henry senior guard Adam Goetz scored 13 of his game-high 25 points in the final quarter to sidetrack the comeback.

Lloyd junior forward Elijah Jouett led his team with 21 points. Sterling Hamilton, who finished the regular season with a team-high 14.9 average, did not score in the game.

St. Henry (14-15) will play Dixie Heights (18-10) in the district final at 8 p.m. Friday. The outcome of that game will decide the berths for both teams in next week’s 9th Region tournament.

DIXIE HEIGHTS 49, LUDLOW 38 — Dixie Heights converted 12 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to come away with the victory in the low-scoring 34th District semifinal game on the Colonels’ home court.

Neither team scored more than 10 points in the first three quarters, but Dixie Heights had a slim 27-18 lead going into the final period. The Colonels stayed on top by getting 12 of their final 22 points at the foul line.

Dixie Heights junior guard Hunter Meyer scored nine of his game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter. Ludlow’s leading scorer was senior guard Michael Camarena with 12 points. The Colonels finished with a 13-5 scoring advantage in free throws.

The matchup for the district final will be Dixie Heights (18-10) vs. St. Henry (14-15) at 8 p.m. Friday. Both teams will advance to next week’s 9th Region playoffs.

20160201_Sports_Med_ADs_DS_300x200NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 82, HIGHLANDS 40 — Senior forward Ben Weyer scored 26 points for NewCath and the Thoroughbreds won their sixth straight game in the 36th District semifinals at Bellevue.

NewCath led, 42-23, at halftime and continued to pull away. The Thoroughbreds made 15 3-point shots during the game with Weyer getting eight. Senior guard Bo Hebel led Highlands with 10 points.

NewCath (24-4) will play Newport (17-13) in the district finals at 7 p.m. Friday. Both teams have already clinched berths in next week’s 9th Region tournament.

NEWPORT 61, BELLEVUE 38 — Newport had a slim eight-point lead at halftime, but the Wildcats outscored the home team, 36-21, after that to win the 36th District semifinal games.

Newport used a 1-3-1 defense most of the game to hold Bellevue to less than 40 points. On offense, the Wildcats had four-double figures scorers with junior forward Anthony Harmon netting 16 points and senior guard Ethan Snapp getitng 15. Bellevue senior guard Matt Fryman also had 15 points,

In the district final at 7 p.m. Friday, Newport (17-13) will go up against NewCath (24-4). Both teams will play in the 9th Region tournament next week.

CONNER 56, RYLE 51 — Senior guard Michael Scott scored 29 points to lead the Cougars to victory on their home court in the 33rd District semifinals.

It was a one-point game with less than two minutes remaining, but Conner scored the last four points to keep its season alive. The Cougars have lost seven games this season by six points or less.

Conner (16-10) will play Cooper (24-3) in the district final at 6:30 p.m. Friday and both teams will receive berths in next week’s 9th Region tournament. Cooper beat Boone County, 68-42, in the other district semifinal game on Wednesday.
