St. Elizabeth Healthcare will dedicate its Wound Care Centers in Covington and Ft. Thomas to Patrick T. Birrer, MD in a ceremony at 2 p.m. April 25 at St. Elizabeth Covington. Birrer died last November at age 59 after a three-year battle with esophageal cancer.
Signage with Birrer’s name will be unveiled in recognition of a man known for his unwavering commitment and service to the community.
“This is someone who believed his purpose was to serve others, including his patients, the homeless and the less fortunate in other countries,” said Anne McCarthy, Community Education Specialist for the Wound Care Centers at St. Elizabeth Healthcare. “He was a very special person who would always go the extra mile.”
Birrer, medical director of Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, was diagnosed with cancer in September 2012 but continued to work. He was involved in emergency medicine for more than 20 years and went on mission trips to places such as Haiti, Honduras and Mexico.
“We miss him,” McCarthy said. “But he inspired so many of us. This is a deserving tribute.”
