Renaissance Covington has received the prestigious Great American Main Street Award’s 2016 “One To Watch” award at the Main Street America National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Renaissance Covington is a nonprofit aimed at revitalizing Covington’s urban core through creative placemaking, special events, community programming and small business support.
Each year the National Main Street Center recognizes the country’s best examples of comprehensive commercial district revitalization. Winners are selected from a nationwide pool of applicants by a national jury based on successful and innovative uses of the Center’s Main Street FourPoint Approach.
Renaissance Covington competed with dozens of other Great American Main Street Programs to be considered. The National Main Street Awards are judged on the following criteria:
- Overall strength of the Main Street program and documented success in creating an exciting place to live, work, play and visit.
- Demonstrated impact aligning with the Main Street Approach.
- Commitment to historic preservation.
- Active involvement of the public and private sector.
- Model partnerships, including inclusive engagement of community members and local stakeholders in the downtown revitalization process.
Established in 1980 as a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Main Street Center works with a nationwide network of communities to encourage preservation-based economic revitalization.
A subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Main Street Center provides information, offers technical assistance, holds conferences and workshops, and conducts research and advocacy on critical revitalization issues.
Renaissance Covington was selected as a semifinalist before being selected to receive the One to Watch Award. This award is presented to a Great American Main Street Award applicant and recognizes an exceptional community that is working on innovative projects and is on the cusp of major transformation.
