The Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team announced the hiring of Kean Barclay as assistant coach. Barclay joins the team immediately.
“I am very excited with the addition of Kean to our coaching staff,” said head men’s soccer coach John Basalyga. “He brings a wide range of coaching and recruiting experiences both internationally and domestically. His coaching philosophy will mesh well with the program and our current student-athletes.”

Barclay comes to NKU after serving as men’s soccer head coach at East Central College in Union, Missouri for five seasons. In 2015, the Falcons finished the season with a record of 16-4-1 and berth in the NJCAA Region 16 Tournament where they reached the finals for the second-consecutive season. In the 2014 campaign, Barclay was selected the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
A native of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Barclay’s coaching experience includes stops as an assistant coach at Longwood University (2007) and at the University of the Ozarks (2008). From 2003-2004, Barclay served as head coach of University of Abertay in Dundee, Scotland, managing the men’s second team in the Scottish University Division. Prior to his stint as head coach at Abertay played for the squad from 2002-2003 help the team reach the semi-finals of the European University Soccer Tournament in 2003.
As a player Barclay also played and trained with Carnoustie Panmure FC (2003-2004) and Lochore Welfare FC (2002-2003) professional teams in Scotland. In 2004, Barclay played for Oakton Community College.
Barclay holds a Higher National Diploma in Sport, Health and Exercise from the University of Abertay (2003), a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Indiana University (2006) and a Masters In Education (M.Ed) in Higher Education from the University of Missouri St. Louis (2015). Barclay also served coaching internships with Wolverhampton FC, England (2007), West Ham United, London, England (2007) and at the University of Missouri St. Louis.
Barclay also holds a U.S. Soccer Federation National ‘C’ License, a Coaching Endorsement from Indiana Univeristy, a Scottish Football Association Coaching Certificate and is a member of the U.S. Soccer Ferderation and National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
