Multi-hit games propel Freedom’s Godbold to Frontier League Player of Week honors

Andrew Godbold has been named the Frontier League Player of the Week.

This is the Freedom’s third weekly honor and first Player of the Week award this season. Jeremy Gooding and Jordan Kraus were both named Pitcher of the Week earlier this summer.

Godbold is coming off a stretch of three multi-hit games in his last four starts. The Frontier League All-Star and Home Run Derby Champion hit .450 (9-for-20) this week with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored, and three RBIs. In his last four games, Godbold has two three-hit games and has posted a .533 batting average.

Godbold’s team-leading ninth home run of the year was a critical one as he gave the Freedom an early edge in an eventual 3-0, series-clinching shutout of the Traverse City Beach Bums. He also added a double later in the ballgame.

On the season, the Florence outfielder is leading the team in extra-base hits (26), doubles, (17), and home runs (nine, tied with Collins Cuthrell). He also ranks second in batting average at .304, among active players with at least 10 games played, and stolen bases (16).

Earlier this season, Godbold had a stellar week that propelled him into the All-Star discussion. From June 22-28, Godbold hit .500 (12-for-24) with six doubles, three home runs, nine runs scored, and 12 RBIs. He led Florence to a 4-2 home stand, which started the Freedom’s upward trajectory this season. Since June 22, the Freedom are 20-12, which is the second best record in the Frontier League during that span.

Godbold and the Freedom stay home all week, beginning with a three-game set against the Schaumburg Boomers this Wednesday (doubleheader) and Thursday. Florence then welcomes the Lake Erie Crushers to UC Health Stadium for a weekend series Aug. 5-7.
