NKU’s A Night with the Norse raises over $100,000 to support student athletes

Northern Kentucky University’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics’ inaugural A Night with the Norse gala was the most successful benefit event in program history, bringing in over $100-thousand dollars in front of a sold-out crowd Saturday at Great American Ballpark.

“What a terrific night in celebration of NKU Athletics,” exclaimed Ken Bothof, director of athletics. “The Champions Club at Great American Ballpark was abuzz with passionate support for our student-athletes. Evenings like Saturday demonstrate what we’ve been saying for months now is true – Norse Athletics is truly on the rise.

“I’d like to thank each and every person in attendance for their support of Norse Athletics,” continued Bothof. “Your generosity will have a positive impact on the lives of our student-athletes.”

Over 320 individuals mingled with Norse coaches, administrators, local celebrities and fellow supporters of the program, while enjoying music from Northern Kentucky’s Jazz Band and funny quips from comedian and event-emcee Josh Sneed.

Mark King, President of adidas Group, North America, provided the keynote address. King illustrated the importance of athletics in this country and how transformational sports can be at all levels. He urged the attendees to see the value of supporting NKU’s approximately 250 student-athletes and how their continued support makes a difference in their lives.

“Our Go Norse Fund Board did an exceptional job serving as advocates in the community for this event,” said Jeff Baldwin, NKU’s Director of Development. “The Board generated the support necessary to not only make this an enjoyable night, but to create an event that was highly successful in supporting our student-athletes.”

The night also featured both live and silent auctions that included over 100 items.

Northern Kentucky Athletics has been extremely successful since transitioning to NCAA Division I in the 2012-13 season. The Norse have collected numerous accolades on the fields and courts, while also demonstrating significant success in both the classroom and community. NKU’s student-athletes have recorded 10-straight semesters with at least a 3.0 GPA, including each of the last four above a 3.2.

Additionally, the approximately 250 student-athletes amassed over 2,700 hours of community service last year alone. Northern Kentucky is eligible to compete for NCAA postseason berths for the first time this year.
