Covington Mayor Joe Meyer introduces ‘new rules’ for commission meetings, reaffirms vested powers

On Tuesday, the newly elected Board of Commissioners restored the balance of power to Covington’s City Hall during their first meeting, based on a recommendation of the new mayor.

It was the first meeting for the new governing body.

The Board of Commissioners established new rules for governing the business of the Commission and setting agendas.

Covington Mayor Joe Meyer presented the rules to the public during the Commission meeting and explained their significance.

Based on recommendations from the Kentucky League of Cities the new rules set the tone for a successful Commission and reaffirm the legislative and executive powers vested in the Board of Commissioners.

The rules are organized around the following principles, the mayor showed in a PowerPoint presentation:

Informed Decision Making

True Transparency

Citizen Participation

Efficiency

The new rules include courtesy to citizens who come to speak to the commission. Public Comments will occur at the beginning of the meeting, say the rules, and each speaker is enttled to a maximum of three minutes. Questions asked during this order will be answered at a later date.

“The new rules are intended to provide guidance and to insure that each Commission meeting maintains order and completes the business at hand in a professional, successful and constructive manner,” said Meyer.

“I appreciate the thoughtful consideration of my fellow Commissioners. I look forward to our continued cooperation as we work to serve the people of Covington.”
