CVG is ‘StormReady,’ says National Weather Service, designation earned by preparing for emergencies

The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) has been designated as StormReady® by the National Weather Service. StormReady® communities are prepared to save lives from the onslaught of severe weather through advanced planning, education and awareness.

CVG exceeded the requirements needed to qualify for the designation. Guidelines are based on population, and include:

·         Establish a 24-hour period warning point and emergency operations center

·         Have more than one method of receiving severe weather information and alerting the public

·         Create a system that monitors local weather conditions

·         Promote the significance of public readiness through community seminars

· Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding exercises

The airport has a number of weather and emergency plans, all of which are approved by the Federal Aviation Association (FAA), including an airport emergency plan, a winter operations plan, and a surface movement guidance and control system for the airfield that details the airport’s response plan for periods of fog/low visibility.

The StormReady® designation process formalized the weather and life safety processes CVG already had in place to protect passengers and employees at the airport.

StormReady® is a nationwide community preparedness program sponsored by the United States National Weather Service that encourages government entities and commercial gathering sites to prepare for severe storms.
