No other column has received such a positive response in recent times than the column in which I mentioned my mother and the problems facing our foster care system.
It is Mother’s Day this Sunday, May 14, so I thought it would be a good time to talk a little bit more about mothers, families, and how important they are to Kentucky.
For many Kentuckians, no person has had a greater role in their lives than the role of our loving mothers.
For others, someone has stepped in and fulfilled a mother’s role. I cannot think of anything more important than the role of a loving mother.
Those of us who have one or had one are indeed very fortunate. My mother was loving but also held me accountable, always encouraging, I always felt loved. Her first priority was my dad and her children.
As much as we talk about how much we love our mothers, however, our society in many ways has diminished a mother’s role.
This Mother’s Day, let us all reaffirm our commitment to the role of motherhood in society and help out any way we can. And if we are fortunate enough to still have our mothers, let us make sure we make Mother’s Day a special day for them.
Overall, I love this time of year. There are lots of graduations and I love hearing young people telling me where they are going to college, or what their career plans are at graduation parties. Spring weddings, warm weather, outdoor get-togethers, and time to put the garden in.
