The Newport Police Dept is still running the “Connect Newport” campaign to network with residents and business owners.
The police are seeking to identify those with working exterior security camera systems at their home or business.
Det. Dennis McCarthy, Criminal Investigations Division, is heading the campaign and says he is wanting to hear from everyone in Newport who has a security camera system. He has created a database for the camera system information that Police will use as a reference during investigations.
For example, if there is a theft/ burglary in your area, one of the detectives would check the database to see if there are any known cameras working in that area that would have captured the crime. Once a camera is located, detectives would contact the camera owner and network with them to review footage and determine if the camera does, in fact, have video evidence.
The information provided to Det. McCarthy and this database are considered Confidential and will not be released or discussed to those who are not actively investigating the case.
Det. McCarthy says the Police Department does not want control of your cameras and will not invade your privacy, they simply want to connect with the community to identify resources and help solve and detour crime.
Camera footage supplied by residents and business owners has been helpful in identifying criminals.
Cooperation in this is completely voluntary and if you are interested, please contact Det. McCarthy at (859)655-2018 or email at dmccarthy@police.newportky.gov .
