Covington organizations join together to create ‘Sense of Belonging’ starting with free dance class

The Point/Arc of Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati is collaborating with Rooted Yoga and Covington-based dance company Pones for a series of artistic workshops and movement classes based on belonging. Alongside The Point/Arc’s pre-vocation and career exploration classes, fellow artists and the Covington community will explore what it means to truly belong for individuals of all ages and abilities.

A free community dance class will be hosted at Rooted Yoga on Sunday, September 30 from 2-3 p.m. where attendees will learn a group dance. This is event is free and no dance experience is required. Following the community dance class, the dancers will perform the group dance during the Pike Street Stroll on the evening of Thursday, October 4, all promoting a sense of community and belonging.

“While working with our individuals and families, we recognized a need and desire for a sense of connection. We hope to bring local community members together over shared interests connected to the arts, and in doing so, foster a community of belonging,” said Jennifer Wells, Vice President of The Point/Arc Zembrodt Education Center.

“We’re intentionally creating an event where people with and without disabilities can share their interests and experience a sense of belonging.”

The program is presented thanks to the Creative Community Grant program through Artswave and The Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington.

“In the past four years, The Center has supported dozens of projects like this one that create fun and unique opportunities for people to experience something new. We believe that when friends, neighbors, or family members have creative experiences together, it can deepen relationships and create tighter bonds,” said Shannon Ratterman, Program Manager of The Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington.

The mission of The Point/Arc is to fill in the service gaps for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) educationally, residentially, socially and vocationally, allowing them to reach their highest potential.
