Julia Popova and Emily Mohs combined for 26 kills as No. 23 Thomas More College swept past No. 18 Ohio Northern University, 25-22, 25-16, 29-27, on Friday night in Bluffton, Ohio.
Popova finished with 14 kills, five blocks and attacked at a .565 clip as Thomas More improved to 6-0. Mohs added 12 kills, four blocks and hit .600 for the Saints, who defeated Ohio Northern for the second time in six days. Thomas More had opened the season last week with a five-set victory at Ohio Northern.
Madison Krumpelman tallied 11 kills and nine digs Friday as Thomas More prevailed in a battle of nationally ranked teams in the NCAA Division III poll. Jessica Ginn finished with 17 digs for the Saints.
Thomas More earlier on Friday posted a 25-16, 26-28, 25-14, 26-24 win over host Bluffton to begin the two-day Spiketacular Tournament. Jenna Fessler dished out 33 assists for the Saints, while Jenna Mummert added 13 kills and six blocks. Krumpelman finished the match with 14 kills and 16 digs, while Popova registered 12 kills.
Thomas More closes out the tournament with matches against Heidelberg (noon) and DePauw (2 p.m.) on Saturday, then returns home to meet Hanover on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Connor Convocation Center.
TMC WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO WHEATON: The Thomas More women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to host Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday at the Bob Baptista Invitational.
Madison Peebles scored the lone goal of the match for Wheaton in the 65th minute off an assist by Anna Saunders. Thomas More goalkeeper Maddy Kim played all 90 minutes and had seven saves.
Thomas More is 0-3, while Wheaton is 3-0. The Saints meet Aurora (Ill.) at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
