Newport schedules street resurfacing through the end of the year — here’s what will get fixed

The City of Newport has announced that the following streets are scheduled to be resurfaced by the end of the year through a competitive bidding process awarded to Northern Kentucky-based Eaton Asphalt:

• Elm Street from Isabella to Brighton
• Brighton Street from 6th to 12th
• Watch Pointe Lane and Watch Hill Lane
• Roberts Street
• Hoyer Alley

Newport Community Services Director Doug Roell said every effort is being made to complete the work this year.

“However, it is possible given the uncertainty of the weather that a couple of these streets may not be completed by year’s end and before the asphalt plants close for the season,” Roell said.  “While we hope this is not the case, any street that is not able to be completed this year will be completed in the spring when the asphalt plants reopen.”

In addition to the streets scheduled to be resurfaced, Lexington Avenue is scheduled to be totally reconstructed by TMS Construction in the spring or summer of next year.

“Unfortunately the complexity of the project, contractor commitments and weather prohibits the reconstruction of Lexington Avenue this year,” Roell said.

Also this year, Eaton Asphalt will be constructing a redesigned roadway at the intersection of East 9th Streets and Wildcat Drive where the old City Garage once stood.

“This redesigned roadway will provide better traffic flow, safer pedestrian travel and greatly improve the overall aesthetics of the area.,” Roell said.

Additional information about all these projects will be made available as soon as the city has firm dates from the contractors when each project will begin. Residents should watch for signs that will be posted restricting parking to facilitate the completion of the work.

“The City is very excited about these projects and our commitment to continually improve our roads for our residents and visitors,” said Newport City Manager Tom Fromme.
