Campbell County girls soccer team wins first state playoff game with tiebreaker goal in final minutes

Campbell County junior Kennedy Crowley scored her third goal late in the second half to give her team a 3-2 win over Boyle County in the opening round of the state playoffs on Monday in Alexandria.

This is the Camels first win in three trips to the state playoffs as the 10th Region champion. Their opponent in the quarterfinal round will be Lexington Catholic, the team that defeated Highlands, 3-2, in a penalty kick shootout on Monday.

Crowley’s first two goals came in the first half that ended in a 2-2 tie. She got the game-winner off an assist by Maryem Gonulates and lifted Campbell County’s record to 15-8-3. The Camels have won four straight since losing to Brossart in the 37th District final.

Lexington Catholic has a 20-2-4 record after its shootout victory against Highlands (15-6-4). The Knights have not lost a match since Aug. 31. During their current 16-0-2 streak, they have allowed only three goals and defeated Highlands, 1-0, on Sept. 10.

Opening round matches in the boys state soccer tournament on Tuesday include Somerset at Campbell County at 7 p.m. and Lexington Henry Clay at Covington Catholic at 7:30 p.m. The winners of those matches will meet in the quarterfinal round later this week.
