Lexington Catholic scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half and defeated Campbell County, 2-1, in the quarterfinal round of the girls state soccer tournament on Thursday in Alexandria.

Campbell County’s lone goal was by junior Caitlin Crowley in the opening minutes of her team’s first appearance in the state quarterfinals.
The Camels (15-9-3) had mostly underclassmen in their starting lineup this season, but they will lose scoring leader Jozie Holmes to graduation.
On Saturday, the Campbell County boys soccer team has a 4 p.m. home game against Lexington Henry Clay in the quarterfinal round of their state tournament. If the Camels win, it will be the fifth consecutive year that a Northern Kentucky boys soccer team has made it to the state final four.
In boys opening-round games, Henry Clay got past Covington Catholic, 2-1, and Campbell County knocked off Somerset, 3-2, behind goals by senior Zach Franzen, freshman Mesfin Brown and sophomore Blake Minor.
