Highlands swept the 36th District boys and girls soccer titles with victories over Newport Central Catholic teams on Tuesday at Northern Kentucky University.
The Bluebirds won the boys match, 1-0, to reclaim the district title. They were district champions for seven straight years before losing to NewCath in a penalty kick shootout last season. Highlands won the regular season match, 5-1, between the two teams.
In the girls district final, Highlands got goals from five players during a 5-0 win over NewCath and carried off the championship trophy for the ninth consecutive year.
The first goal by sophomore Gabby Simons and the last goal by senior Kate Fausz came off assists by freshman Maren Ormes.
There are 10 boys and girls district finals scheduled on Thursday. All of those teams will receive berths in region tournaments to be played next week.
The 9th Region girls bracket will include Conner, Cooper, St. Henry, Dixie Heights, Highlands, NewCath, Notre Dame and Holy Cross. The eight teams in the boys tournament will be Conner, Ryle, Dixie Heights, St. Henry, Covington Catholic, Beechwood, Highlands and NewCath.
Brossart and Campbell County will have teams in the 10th Region boys and girls tournaments. The 8th Region tournament qualifiers include the Simon Kenton boys and girls teams and the Walton-Verona boys team.
