Two sisters will be on opposite sides of the net when Villa Madonna plays Notre Dame in the opening round of the 9th Region volleyball tournament on Sunday at St. Henry High School.

Maya Kondik is a 6-foot senior on Villa Madonna’s team that’s making its first appearance in the region playoffs since 2015. She had team-high totals of 278 kills and 29 blocks going into last week’s 34th District final.

Her younger sister, Teagan,  is a 6-foot sophomore on Notre Dame’s team that’s ranked No. 1 in the state and won the last two 9th Region titles. Her season totals include 141 kills and 33 blocks.

This will be the first time the talented sisters have played against each other in a high school match.

Maya will continue her volleyball career at Centre College. She is among the top students in her senior class and recently earned a Advanced Placement Capstone Diploma, a two-year program where students engage in college-level coursework.

The 9th Region first-round matches on Sunday begin with Highlands vs. Cooper at 1 p.m., followed by Notre Dame-Villa Madonna at 2:30 p.m., Ryle-Newport Central Catholic at  4 p.m. and St. Henry-Beechwood at 5:30 p.m.

Perennial powers Notre Dame and St. Henry are at opposite ends of the bracket and would not meet until the final. In the last 20 region tournaments, the winner of their match has been the champion. The teams have met in the region final 14 times and Notre Dame holds an 8-6 edge in those matches.

The latest Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association state rankings included No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 4 St. Henry, No. 9 Ryle and No. 18 Beechwood. Simon Kenton was ranked No. 20 and will compete in the 8th Region tournament. Scott and Brossart are in the 10th Region bracket.
