City of Florence announces return of Public Works Academy for 2026; applications now open

The City of Florence has announced the return of its Public Works Academy, a hands-on training program with valuable experience and insight into the essential services that keep a city running.

The seven-week program will take place June 8 through July 24 and offers participants the opportunity to gain real world training in a variety of public works and infrastructure operations. Through interactive sessions and field-based instruction, participants will learn about the many responsibilities involved in maintaining and improving city services.

Throughout the academy, participants will engage in practical training sessions covering essential areas such as OSHA 10 Certification, CPR/AED Certification, concrete forming/finishing training, water sampling, installation of storm sewer piping, framing/installation of a pergola at a city park, installation of landscape beds, painting, detailing, performing preventative maintenance work on emergency response vehicles, and touring the water and sanitary sewer treatment plants.

In addition to hands-on technical training, the academy will also provide career preparation opportunities, including resume development and mock interviews conducted by the Public Services Director and Operations Superintendent. These sessions are designed to help participants explore potential careers in public works and related fields.

Participants may choose between Monday–Friday or Monday–Thursday schedules, with flexibility provided for planned vacations during the program.

Interested applicants must submit a resume and complete the application by May 8 to be considered. Applications and additional program information are available on the City of Florence website.
