As demand for skilled trades continues to grow across Kentucky, an upcoming event in Boone County is giving children the opportunity to explore the construction industry in the most hands-on way possible. Big Dig 2026, taking place Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Boone County Fairgrounds (5819 Idlewild Rd, Burlington, will allow kids to safely operate real construction equipment while learning about the careers that help build our communities.

Big Dig gives children the rare opportunity to operate heavy construction equipment under the guidance of industry professionals, creating an exciting and educational experience that introduces young people to the world of construction and skilled trades.
More than 20 pieces of construction equipment will be on-site for kids to safely operate throughout the day, offering a hands-on look at the powerful machines used to build homes, roads, and communities. From excavators to skid steers, participants will experience the equipment that powers the construction industry.
“Big Dig is about giving kids the opportunity to experience construction in a hands-on way,” said Brian Miller, President of the Enzweiler Building Institute and Executive Vice President of the Building Industry Association of Northern Kentucky. “When young people can climb into a piece of equipment and see how it works, it sparks curiosity and helps them realize the incredible opportunities that exist in the construction industry.”
Events like Big Dig highlight the growing need for skilled workers in the construction industry and the importance of introducing young people to these rewarding careers early.
Tickets are available for purchase online in advance, with a limited number available at the gate on the day of the event.
