MathCounts — results of state competition — some local students named among winners


Winners of the 2026 State MATHCOUNTS Competition held at the University of Kentucky are:

• 1st place: Bourne Fan of SCAPA Bluegrass Middle School coached by Ryan Harrington
• 2nd place: Sri Shubhaan Vulava of Meyzeek Middle School coached by Katie Miller
• 3rd place: Alex Wang of Winburn Middle School coached by Larken Laur
• 4th place: Sophia Rara of Meyzeek Middle School coached by Katie Miller

These four students joined nearly 150 6th, 7th, and 8th grade “Mathletes” from 43 schools across the Commonwealth. Each of the four students were awarded a choice of a four-year $3,000 scholarship to the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering or a full-tuition scholarship to the University of Louisville. They were each offered a competing spot in the 2026 RTX MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Orlando, Florida held May 9-12, where they will represent the Commonwealth of Kentucky for the national title.

Katie Miller, coach for Meyzeek Middle School, will coach the Kentucky team during the national competition. The remaining students who placed in the top ten, each earning a $1,500 per-year scholarship for four years to the University of Louisville, were:

• 5th place: George Zhou of Meyzeek Middle School coached by Katie Miller

6th place: Maverick Schutzman of Campbell County Middle School coached by Faye Smith

• 7th place: Cahil Agrawal of Highlands Latin School coached by Phillip Bramsen

• 8th place: Ishan Nath of Gray Middle School coached by Kerri Stec

• 9th place: Aarav Tibrewal of Beaumont Middle School coached by Crystal Dixon

• 10th place: Janus Cheung of Heath Middle School coached by Michele Schooley

Meyzeek Middle School coached by Katie Miller had a 1st place finish in the team category, the remaining top 10 team winners were:

• 3rd place team: Winburn Middle School coached by Larken Laur

• 4th place team: Campbell County Middle School coached by Faye Smith

• 5th place team: Highlands Latin School coached by Phillip Bramsen

• 7th place team: Bowling Green Junior High School coached by Angela Langford

• 8th place team: Owensboro Middle School coached by Sarah Sullivan

MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program designed to develop and strengthen math, science, leadership, and teamwork skills. The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to increase interest and involvement in mathematics among all middle school students to assist in developing a technically literate population essential to U.S. global competitiveness and our quality of life.
