Jennifer Jahn: Kentucky to launch new, modernized driver licensing system in June

A new, modernized driver licensing system and online portal will be introduced across Kentucky in June 2026, Gov. Andy Beshear announced on April 15. The updated system is expected to reduce wait times at regional offices and significantly minimize paperwork for residents.

“This new system will provide families with the secure, online services they expect in today’s world,” Beshear said. “We are encouraging folks to plan ahead and take care of any needed renewals ahead of June, as the transition will briefly impact hours at our offices.”

The upgrade will replace a decades-old system and introduce a new online portal, myDrive, where Kentuckians can create personal accounts to manage their licensing needs. Through the portal, users will be able to:

• Pre-apply for a driver’s license
• Pre-apply for a learner’s permit
• Pre-apply for a state ID
• Request a replacement card
• Check their current license status

Additional details about setting up myDrive accounts will be released as the rollout date approaches.

State officials are urging residents to plan ahead to avoid delays during the transition period. Those with credentials expiring in June are especially encouraged to visit a Driver Licensing Regional Office before June 4.

All regional offices will be closed on June 4 and 5, and hours will be adjusted from June 8 through June 18 as staff work to migrate more than 4 million driver records to the new system.

“With approximately 55,000 Kentuckians due to renew in June, now is the best time to take care of your licensing needs to save valuable time before the temporary office closures,” said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman. She also noted that many residents may be eligible to renew online or by mail if they have a completed vision screening form, allowing them to avoid an in-person visit.

Driver’s licenses in Kentucky can be renewed up to six months before their expiration date.

The new system will also benefit commercial drivers by allowing medical certificates to be submitted directly by approved medical providers. This change eliminates the need for drivers to manually send results to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), streamlining the certification process.

As part of the update, the MyCDL portal will be discontinued.

Appointments can be scheduled ahead of the transition through the Drive KY website.

As Kentucky prepares to implement the updated system, officials emphasize the importance of early action. The new platform is designed to provide faster, more efficient service, but residents who plan ahead will be best positioned to avoid temporary disruptions and ensure a smooth transition.
