Doe Run Lake, a roughly 30-acre lake located on Bullock Pen Road off Kentucky 17, is part of a larger 183-acre park that includes hiking trails and picnic areas. Amenities at the park include hiking, boating, fishing, and kayaking. A kayak rental company, Schack’s Yaks, is marking its one-year anniversary operating a kiosk at the lake.

The park, which operates under the supervision of Kenton County Parks & Recreation, has drawn attention this week following several social media posts by a group called Bluegrass State Naturists. The group describes itself as promoting a clothing-optional lifestyle in Kentucky.
In recent posts, the group identified an area of the park as a “nude recreation area.” The designation has also been shared through other nudist-affiliated websites and regional social media groups.
The posts prompted mixed reactions online, with some residents raising concerns about the designation in a public park and others questioning whether the claim is legally valid.
Legal context
Kentucky law does not prohibit individuals from identifying as nudists or joining nudist organizations. However, state law places restrictions on where nudity may occur.

A statute originally enacted in 1942 and later amended addresses nudist organizations, requiring certain conditions such as licensing and shielding activities from public view. In addition, current Kentucky laws regarding indecent exposure and public nudity generally prohibit nudity in public spaces.
Local regulations add further restrictions. Kenton County ordinances prohibit public nudity in areas such as parks, streets, and businesses. Exceptions typically include enclosed single-sex restrooms, shower facilities, and private hotel rooms.
Violations of state law related to public nudity or indecent exposure may carry penalties ranging from a Class B misdemeanor to more serious charges for repeat offenses.
As of publication, officials with Kenton County and the City of Erlanger have not indicated any contact from the organization regarding the designation.
The group is also not affiliated with the Friends of Doe Run Lake organization.
A spokesperson from Kenton County issued this statement:
“We are aware of recent social media posts regarding Doe Run Lake, so we want to be very clear: Doe Run Lake is a County-owned park, and there is zero tolerance of nudity of any kind.
“Anyone observed or reported engaging in nudity at the park will be subject to law enforcement response and arrest.
“We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping keep our parks safe, welcoming, and appropriate for all visitors.”
