Brossart, St. Henry and Covington Catholic will have football teams competing in different classes during the 2027 and 2028 seasons if a proposed statewide realignment is finalized by the KHSAA Board of Control in May.

Football classes are determined by male enrollments, but the three Catholic high schools were also subject to a 1.35 multiplier that inflates private school enrollments. The multiplier is used to create “competitive balance” in the sport, according to the KHSAA.

The multiplier moves Brossart from Class 1A to 2A, St. Henry from Class 2A to 3A and CovCath from Class 4A to 5A under the proposed realignment.

St. Henry and Brossart are two Northern Kentucky high school football teams that will be in new classes under a proposed statewide realignment.

The other 18 football teams in Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties would remain in their current classes. But the only local district that would stay the same is Campbell County, Ryle, Simon Kenton and Great Crossing in Class 6A.

Under the realignment, Brossart would join a Class 2A district that includes Beechwood, Gallatin County, Owen County and Walton-Verona.

When Brossart competed on the Class 2A level from 2011 to 2014, the Mustangs were 8-31 overall and never made it to the playoffs during those four seasons.

Holy Cross would be part of a five-team Class 1A district with Bellevue, Dayton, Newport Central Catholic and Newport. That switch would then put Ludlow in a Class 1A district that includes Bracken County, Eminence and Trimble County.

St. Henry would be moving to a Class 3A district that includes down-the-road rival Lloyd, Pendleton County, Bath County and Fleming County. St. Henry made its varsity debut in football last season and posted a 2-9 record.

Highlands would remain in Class 4A with Grant County, Harrison County, Holmes and Mason County as its district rivals. CovCath would move up to Class 5A and join Boone County, Conner, Cooper, Dixie Heights and Scott in one of the few six-team districts created by the realignment.

Beechwood earns All “A” Classic state tournament berth

Walton-Verona earned a state tournament berth the last five years and reached the championship game in 2021 and 2023.  The Bearcats takes a 12-7 record into Friday’s home game against Kentucky Country Day (5-4).

Beechwood whipped Brossart, 16-1, in one of the other All “A” Classic sectional playoffs game on Wednesday to earn a state tournament berth. The Tigers (14-6) had 14 hits in that game with winning pitcher Caleb Arrasmith getting three of them.

Junior outfielder Tyler Fryman opened the game with a solo home run and hit a grand slam in the fifth inning for Beechwood. He had a team-high .632 batting average (36 of 57) with 21 extra base hits and 28 RBI after that game.

The All “A” Classic state baseball tournament is scheduled for April 25-26 at Daviess County High School in Owensboro.
