It was a no-brainer. That’s why when Brighton Properties staged groundbreaking for a new 12-unit residential development addressing housing instability in Northern Kentucky, the name of the facility would be June Gardens.

And why not.

June Miller has been planting her own seeds at the Newport facility for 43 years as the center’s Chief Financial Administration Officer.

The groundbreaker – attended by the Brighton Center staff and Board as well as local public officials – was staged on the new site across the street from the 726 Ann Street location, Monday afternoon.

The future facility was made possible through funding support from the Kentucky Housing Corporation – June Gardens reflects a strong partnership among local and state stakeholders dedicated to expanding access to income-aligned housing in our community.

June Gardens will also provide families with access to the wrap-around supports provided by Brighton Center, designed to help residents achieve long term stability, self-sufficiency, and improved quality of life.

The project is the “brain-child” of Stephanie Stiene, Senior Director, Brighton Properties.

But why?

“In reading about the housing shortage,” she told the Northern Kentucky Tribune, “I wanted to help families become more self-sufficient.”

Stiene is no stranger to the Brighton Center, as she served them 25 years – and the last four as Senior Director Property Manager.

“I was raised in Newport,” sheer continued, “The Brighton Center had a yearly event – The Guild – it was like a woman’s group. We got together once-a-year; and I used to attend when I was younger.”

She was hooked – and never left.

“There has been a need for housing because of that 2023 housing study,” she said, “and more than that, a need for housing that people can afford.”

The June Gardens site, she says, was a temporary community garden. “We would grow flowers, and grow tomatoes. It’ll be better served now. And, we’re looking to relocate the gardens.”

The naming, she says, is a natural. June Miller has served the facility 43 years – and she deflects all praise.

“It’s all about housing for people who need housing,” she told the NKyTribune. “Surprised, sure, it was very, very kind they thought of me.

“But,” she quickly added, “transforming lives and helping individuals become self-sufficient individuals that’s what it’s all about.”

“June Gardens exemplifies our commitment to providing housing solutions,” said Wonda Winkler, president and CEO of Brighton Properties. “By combining income-aligned housing with essential support services, we are curtaining opportunities for individuals and families to reach long-term self-sufficiency.”

“At Brighton Properties,” said Brian Crecco, Properties Board Chair, “we understand the importance of having the best facilities and housing for everyone we serve and June Gardens will be no exception.

“June Gardens will add 12 housing units right here in Newport. There will be six one-bedroom, four two-bedroom, and two three-bedroom units and families will be provided rentral assistance, family-centered coaching, and comprehensive wraparound services.

“Ten of those units will be right here on Ann Streeet, with one unit on Roberts Street and one on Brighton Street – which just happens to be where Brighton Center got its name.”

Brighton Properties, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Brighton Center, Inc., develops high-quality, affordable housing solutions for vulnerable populations.

Brighton Center, Inc., provides a comprehensive network of services focused on education, employment, financial wellness, and housing stability – partnering with individuals and families to reach self-sufficiency and strengthening communities across the region.

The mission of The Brighton Center is to create opportunities for individuals and families to reach self-sufficiency through family support services, education, employment and leadership.

Perhaps Newport Mayor Tom Guidugli, Jr. summed it up best to the gathered crowd in attendance: “This is a symbol of growth as well as hope for our community.”

And, that, too is a no-brainer.
