Covington Catholic’s three-year reign as state champion in boys team tennis came to an end Friday when the Colonels lost to Louisville St. Xavier, 3-0, in the state tournament final at the University of Kentucky.
St. Xavier won No. 2 and No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles to take the title. The other two matches were not completed once the Tigers notched three victories.
CovCath won matches against Pikeville, North Oldham and Owensboro Catholic to reach the championship final. The Colonels’ lineup in the final match had doubles partners William Tribble and Jacob Kramer playing singles with Liam Bradley and Gideon Bement at No. 1 doubles. They all lost in straight sets.
In the girls state team tournament, South Warren defeated Ryle, 3-0, in the first round and ended up losing to Louisville Sacred Heart, 3-0, in the championship final.
Local teams lose in 10th Region softball semifinals
The season ended for the Brossart and Campbell County softball teams in the semifinal round of the 10th Region tournament on Thursday at Bracken County Middle School.
George Rogers Clark outscored Brossart, 12-1, in five innings and Harrison County blanked Campbell County, 10-0, in six innings to advance to the title game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The 10th Region baseball semifinals will be played Saturday with Campbell County vs. George Rogers Clark at 11 a.m. and Scott vs. Montgomery County at 1:30 p.m. at Brossart. The winners will return for the championship game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
