Smith brings more than 20 years of experience in education across diverse urban and suburban districts to Walton-Verona schools. He currently serves as assistant superintendent for student learning at Oldham County Schools in Crestwood, where he oversees curriculum, instruction, and professional development for 20 schools and more than 11,500 students.

Under Smith’s leadership, Oldham County Schools achieved historic academic gains. He led strategic initiatives that helped move 11 schools into Kentucky’s “Blue” — the highest achievement category. It is first time all secondary schools reached the highest tier. All three of the district’s comprehensive high schools now rank among the state’s Top 10.

Smith also expanded career and technical education pathways in secondary schools, secured $200,000 through Kentuckiana Works to launch paid trade internships in high-demand fields, and developed STEM innovation labs in every middle school.

Prior to becoming assistant superintendent in Oldham County, Smith served as principal of North Oldham Middle School, the director of data and intervention for ReNEW Schools in New Orleans, and the director of professional development in the Kent School District. His career began as a Teach For America corps member in New York City public schools.

Smith’s educational background includes a bachelor of arts in politics and a master of arts in educational leadership from the University of California; a master of science in teaching from Fordham University; and a doctor of educational leadership and policy from the University of Washington.

Smith is an active Rotary Club member and partners with civic and business organizations on education initiatives. He currently lives in Goshen, and is the father of Wyatt, 13, and Clara, 9.
