KY Special Olympics at USA Games: Carmen Widener takes silver, Brinkman sets personal record, basketball advances

Swimmer Carmen Widener of Burlington won her second medal of the Special Olympics USA Games on Thursday in Minneapolis. Widener swam 1:41.85 in her heat of the 100-yard breaststroke to take home the silver medal. She was part of the Team Kentucky 4×50-yard medley relay team that won a gold medal on Wednesday.

Fellow swimmer Maddie Brinkman of Union swam the 100-yard freestyle preliminary today. Her time 1:14.37 set a new personal record by three seconds and placed her third in her qualifying heat.

The storm that came through Minneapolis on Tuesday and scuttled the first round of all the golf competitions continues to wreak havoc on that event. Competition ended today, but there is still some question about positions throughout the various golf competitions. As a result, Ft. Mitchell golfer Chris Revay will have to wait to see where he finishes in the 9-hole individual stroke play event.

Daniel Hewitt of Erlanger and the Team Kentucky Unified Basketball team advanced to the gold medal game with a 26-23 victory over Colorado. It was the second win versus Colorado for Team Kentucky at this tournament. They also met in pool play.

Swimmers Widener and Brinkman will both go for their third medal on the final day of competition at these Games today. Widener will swim the 100-yard individual medley, while Brinkman will swim the 100-yard freestyle.

Team Kentucky will return from the games on Saturday. Team Kentucky is scheduled to arrive at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 27.
