The Enzweiler Building Institute has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Ohio Valley Foundation, Fifth Third Bank, N.A., Agent, to support its Critical Tool Replacement Program, an investment that will strengthen skilled trades education and help prepare the next generation of construction professionals throughout Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati.
The grant will fund the replacement of tools and machinery that are no longer safe or serviceable and support the construction of new tool carts to improve safety, accessibility, and organization within EBI’s training labs. These upgrades will ensure students continue to receive hands-on training using industry-standard equipment while learning in a safe and effective environment.
“Hands-on training is the foundation of skilled trades education,” said Brian Miller, President of the Enzweiler Building Institute and Executive Vice President of the Building Industry Association of Northern Kentucky. “We are grateful to the Ohio Valley Foundation for their investment in our students and our mission. This grant helps ensure our students have access to the tools and equipment they need to develop the skills employers are seeking in today’s workforce.”
EBI offers eight training programs, including Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, Carpentry, Masonry, Welding, Facilities Maintenance, and Diesel Mechanics. The institute also provides introductory and dual-credit skilled trades programs for high school students and operates the Covington Academy of Heritage Trades, which offers specialized training in historic preservation and restoration.
Each year, EBI serves approximately 400 students and maintains an 89% cumulative job placement rate across all trades. As the construction industry continues to face a shortage of skilled workers, investments in modern training equipment are critical to preparing students for successful careers while helping employers meet workforce demands.
EBI’s workforce development efforts are strengthened through partnerships with employers, workforce agencies, and educational institutions throughout the region. Through its connection with the Building Industry Association of Northern Kentucky, EBI has access to more than 700 industry employers who actively hire graduates.
In addition, EBI collaborates with Boone County Schools, Kenton County Schools, and Ludlow Independent Schools through its Introduction to Skilled Construction Trades program and continues to expand relationships with school districts across Northern Kentucky. These partnerships provide students with early exposure to skilled trades careers and pathways to high-demand occupations.
“This investment extends far beyond our classrooms,” Miller added. “Every student who graduates from EBI represents another skilled professional entering the workforce, supporting local employers, and strengthening our communities. This grant helps us continue building a strong workforce pipeline for the future.”
The Critical Tool Replacement Program will fund approximately 75% of the cost of replacing essential instructional tools and machinery used throughout EBI’s training programs and 50% of the cost of constructing new tool carts. These improvements will enhance safety, strengthen program delivery, and support student success for years to come.
