Just recently, 32 graduates from Brighton Center’s Center for Employment Training completed workforce development programs designed to meet critical employer needs and help address workforce shortages that continue to impact both the regional and national economy.
Across Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati, employers are searching for skilled, credentialed workers. Healthcare alone employs more than 148,000 people throughout the region, making it the largest employment sector and one of the fastest growing. Yet many healthcare positions remain difficult to fill, with critical roles continuing to experience vacancy rates above healthy workforce levels.
Kentucky has identified healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, construction, and education among its top in-demand workforce sectors. As noted by the Kentucky Workforce Innovation Board, these industries continue to grow, creating opportunities for workers who possess the skills, training, and credentials needed to succeed.
That is why workforce training programs like Brighton Center’s Center for Employment Training are so important.
These programs do more than prepare individuals for employment. They strengthen the workforce, support local employers, and help ensure that the economic growth occurring across the region creates opportunities for everyone.
Today, employers throughout Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati continue to face workforce challenges. In healthcare, shortages remain especially significant among nurses and other direct-care professionals. According to the Kentucky Hospital Association, Kentucky hospitals report an overall workforce vacancy rate of 8.5%.
The opportunities created through workforce training are not theoretical. They represent real jobs, sustainable careers, and pathways to economic mobility.
As Jonika Greene, Workforce Development Assistant Director at Brighton Center, shared during the recent graduation ceremony, “Every graduate crossing this stage tonight helps close a workforce gap, strengthen an employer, and contribute to the future of our region. In doing so, you become part of something much bigger. Your success helps meet those needs.”
The Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati metropolitan area is home to more than 1.18 million workers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, with strong employment growth in healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, logistics, and professional services. These industries depend on individuals who are prepared, trained, and ready to contribute from day one.
One example of this success is recent CET graduate Alicia, whose journey to becoming a Medical Assistant reflects resilience, determination, and self-belief.
“I began my journey at CET in April 2025, facing significant challenges along the way,” Alicia said. “With the support of my Success Coaches and Instructors at CET, I persevered and completed the Medical Assisting program. I also secured a role in behavioral health, where I provide clinical care and compassion every day. My journey is proof that even through life’s hardest moments, a fresh start is always possible.”
The skills taught through programs like CET support hospitals, clinics, businesses, and communities throughout Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati. Equally important are the business partners who open their doors to trainees through externships and work-based learning opportunities. These experiences allow participants to implement what they have learned in real-world environments while helping employers cultivate the next generation of skilled professionals.
As Greene reminded graduates, “Your journey serves as a reminder that talent is everywhere, even when opportunity is not. That is why workforce development matters, not because it fills jobs, but because it changes lives.”
“You are proof that there are talented, capable people in every neighborhood, every ZIP code, and every circumstance. When we strengthen our workforce, we strengthen our economy. We strengthen our community.”
