Dan Weber’s Just Sayin’: Added attractions for NKSHOF Summer Reunion, NKY HS football teams ranked

For anybody looking for a place to go Wednesday, the folks at the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame invite you to their annual end of Summer Reunion at The Gardens of Park Hills, 1622 Dixie Highway in Park Hills, from 5-9 p.m.

“Be Part of the Hall of Fame. Be Part of the Tradition,” they say. “Come support the Hall of Fame. Come celebrate our honorees. Come reconnect with old friends. Come enjoy a great evening. Come be part of the tradition. Celebrate Northern Kentucky sports history and the people who helped create it.”

Following up on last month’s sold-out Golf Outing, the Summer Reunion is the NKSHOF’s second and final fundraiser of the year. Tickets at $10 are available at the door with food, supplied by Skyline Chili and LaRosa’s Pizza, included.

As a special part of this year’s program, in addition to the special awards presentations, will be an inside look at Instant Replay and Review in both Major League Baseball and the NFL. NKSHOF Pres. Randy Marsh, a 30-year MLB umpire and former special assistant to Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre, will explore the ins and outs of all the new technology and how it’s working in baseball.

Then NFL insider Chad Adams will do the honors for pro football. This is the stuff you won’t hear on TV or sports talk radio.

Closing out the night will be these special award presentations:

• Thomas John Fricke Service Award – Sean Nichols

• Patricia “Pat” Scott Lifetime Achievement Award – Sally Meng

• Joe Brennan Leadership Award – Ken Shields

• Jim Claypool Pioneer Award – Chuck Korzenborn

• James E. Steffen “Tiny” Humanitarian Award – Dick Maile

• Kenny Shields Award Coach of the Year – Ted Arlinghaus

• Jack Aynes Award Academic Development – Bob Marsh

• Bill Cappel Community Contribution Award – Charlie Coleman

Highlands, Ryle, CovCath, Beechwood named in Kentucky football preseason rankings

The season starts Friday so now might be a good time to check out how Northern Kentucky teams are ranked in the various state polls and rankings.

Not a surprise that across the board, the old standbys are the ones listed again.

In the Kentucky Sports Report’s overall rankings without consideration of class, Highlands has the top spot for a Northern Kentucky team at No. 9, right ahead of No. 10 Ryle. Covington Catholic is No. 13, just ahead of No. 14 Beechwood.

The Massey Rankings have Ryle at No. 9 overall ahead of No. 10 CovCath and No. 12 Highlands. No Beechwood in their Top 25.

MaxPreps flips those three a bit with CovCath at No. 8, Ryle at No. 9 and Highlands at No. 11.

And finally, High School Football America has CovCath No. 7, Highlands No. 9 and Ryle No. 10. Again, no Beechwood which looks like a big overlook for those three rankings.

All four rankings agree on this: The No 1 team in Kentucky is Louisville Trinity and it’s hard to disagree with that.
