Kentucky Country Day, one of the top boys soccer teams in the state, needed a strong second half to defeat St. Henry, 4-1, in the semifinals of the All “A” Classic small school state tournament on Saturday at Louisville Collegiate’s Barker Brown Athletic Complex.
KCD (16-1-1) entered the tournament ranked No. 6 in the state by Max Preps. But the Bearcats needed three goals in the second half to pull away from unranked St. Henry (11-5) and advance to Sunday’s championship final.
St. Henry’s goal was scored by junior Cooper Gastright. He was named to the state all-tournament team along with senior teammate Connor List.
In a first-round match on Saturday morning, St. Henry defeated Danville, 5-0, to post its seventh shutout of the season.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a goal by junior Luke Lubert. The four goals in the second half came from senior Max Popil and juniors Behran Salyers, Charlie Ramsey and Finn O’Hara.
The St. Henry girls soccer team also reached the All “A” Classic semifinals before losing to Bardstown Bethlehem, 3-0, on Friday.
