Fort Mitchell Mayor Greg Pohlgeers received the 2026 Mayor Ann C. Deatherage Leadership Enrichment and Development (LEAD) Award Friday at the KLC Conference & Expo in Covington.
The Kentucky League of Cities, a nonprofit membership organization, presents the award to a mayor who demonstrates a passion for public service and a commitment to lifelong learning. It honors the legacy of former Carrollton Mayor Ann C. Deatherage, who believed continuing education was key to an elected official’s ability to best serve their community.
Pohlgeers became mayor last year after the former mayor resigned. He had served on the Fort Mitchell City Council since 2017. The nomination for Pohlgeers notes that one of his first actions was to listen. He met with department heads, employees, councilmembers, and residents.
Throughout his first year, Mayor Pohlgeers has maintained an approach centered on asking questions.
“Mayor Pohlgeers understands that learning doesn’t stop when you take office,” said KLC Executive Director/CEO J.D. Chaney. “He asks questions, seeks out different perspectives, and works to ensure he has multiple perspectives before he puts what he learns to work. His willingness to engage with city officials and employees, and just as importantly, the public, makes him an exceptional example of the dedication and commitment this award and Mayor Deatherage represent.”
“I’m truly honored to receive the Mayor Ann C. Deatherage LEAD Award,” Pohlgeers replied. “Leadership in local government is a continual learning process, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from the people around me and from other leaders across Kentucky. Receiving an award that carries the name of Ann Deatherage makes this recognition especially meaningful, and I’m proud to accept it on behalf of the City of Fort Mitchell.”
KLC has served Kentucky cities and municipal organizations since 1927. The League provides legislative advocacy, legal guidance, training, insurance, financial services, community development, and other resources to Kentucky cities.
