Memorial Parkway I-471 bridge painting, cleaning in Campbell County to start Wednesday

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advises motorists of a bridge painting and cleaning project on the Memorial Parkway (KY 1120) bridge overpass over Interstate 471 in Campbell County. This project is expected to begin on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 8 p.m., crews will start the process for a traffic shift on I-471 southbound from south of the Dave Cowens Drive (KY 8X) exit (Exit 5) to south of Memorial Parkway (3.7 mile point), a distance of 1.3 miles.

Once completed, traffic will shift to the right toward the outside wall. Access to the Memorial Parkway on/off ramps to and from I-471 will be maintained.

On I-471 northbound, contractors will block the left and right shoulders from south of the Memorial Parkway overpass (3.7 mile point) to a railroad bridge (4.0 mile marker) to perform cleaning and painting operations.

Three lanes of I-471 southbound and northbound will be maintained during daytime hours. As the project progresses, various single and double lane closures may take place during evening/overnight hours. These lane closures will take place overnight to mitigate travel delays. KYTC will advise ahead of when these closures will take place.

The project team will monitor the construction schedule and coordinate to minimize travel delays during major weekend events like BLINK.

All lanes and the sidewalk on the Memorial Parkway overpass are expected to remain open throughout much of the project. As the project progresses, a single lane and sidewalk closure will be in place to allow crews a safe area to replace joint seals on each end of the bridge. KYTC will advise ahead of when these closures are expected to take place.

This project will address necessary repairs following a crash and subsequent fire on I-471 southbound in March 2026. The project will remove soot damage, clean the bridge and repaint the structure to protect it for years to come. Additionally, I-471 southbound will be resurfaced north of the overpass, and the concrete median will be repaired.

Euro Paint LLC is contracted to perform the $1,758,697 project on behalf of KYTC. Weather permitting, the overall project has an expected completion date of Nov. 15, 2026.

Project schedules are subject to change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
