The USS Nightmare will welcome guests aboard for another season of Halloween scares. The historic haunted dredge is open for the 2026 season, along the Newport waterfront.
For more than 30 years, the USS Nightmare has been a Halloween tradition for visitors throughout
Greater Cincinnati and beyond. Housed aboard the former William S. Mitchell steamboat dredge,
the attraction combines the vessel’s fascinating history with a haunted experience that takes
guests through two decks of dark passageways, original equipment, and the twisted world of
Captain Mitchell and his crew.
From working dredge to death dredge
Built in 1934 by the Marietta Manufacturing Company in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, the William
S. Mitchell was designed for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to help maintain river channels
and keep commercial traffic moving. The steam-powered dredge spent decades working the nation’s rivers before eventually being retired from service.
The Mitchell’s history took a dramatic turn during a flood when the massive dredge broke loose
from its moorings and began drifting downriver. Before it could be stopped, the vessel struck
several bridges, causing significant damage, still visible today. News coverage at the time dubbed
the incident the “Mitchell Massacre.”
That event became the inspiration for the USS Nightmare’s dark story and saved the dredge from
the scrapyard. The attraction blends the real history of the vessel with the legends surrounding
Captain Mitchell, his daughter Anna, and the crew who are said to have met a terrible fate aboard
the Death Dredge.
Today, visitors weave through much of the Mitchell’s original machinery and equipment, including
its massive paddlewheels, steam engines, and other components that once powered its dredging
operations. The vessel’s history is not simply part of the attraction—it is what makes the USS
Nightmare such a unique place to experience Halloween.
The crew
Life aboard the William S. Mitchell was anything but easy. More than 60 crewmembers worked aboard the dredge, keeping its massive machinery running and carrying out the demanding work of dredging the nation’s rivers. Their lives revolved around the vessel, its equipment, and the river.
The USS Nightmare brings that history to life through its crew, detailed scenes, and original dredge equipment. As guests make their way through the vessel, they will encounter the dark legacy of Captain Mitchell, his family, and the men and women who called the Mitchell home. The hard work and daily life aboard the dredge become part of the story, revealing a side of the Death Dredge that goes beyond the scares.
A special combination ticket
The USS Nightmare is partnering with The Dent Schoolhouse in Cincinnati, Ohio, to offer a limited-time Scream Seekers VIP Combo. The combination ticket includes Fast Pass admission to both attractions for $66.66 (plus applicable ticket fees), giving Halloween fans the opportunity to experience two of the region’s best-known haunted attractions.
The combo must be purchased by September 26, 2026, and the second attraction must be visited

Special movie promotion November 13
The USS Nightmare will also be partnering with AMC Theatres at Newport on the Levee for a special movie promotion on Friday, November 13. Additional details about the promotion will be announced at a later date.
Season information
The USS Nightmare will operate on select nights through Friday, November 13. Budget friendly ticket pricing is available on Sunday and Thursday nights in October. For standard show nights, onsite ticket sales begin at 7 p.m. with show doors opening at 7:30 p.m.
Nightmare admission options include General Admission, Fast Pass, and Front of the Line tickets. For those looking for a more interactive experience, the RIP Experience upgrade takes guests deeper into the vessel’s hidden areas. This extended experience includes hands-on interaction with the crew, additional areas to explore, and a closer look at the darker secrets of the Death
Dredge.
Special events for the season include the family-friendly Lights-on Matinee on Sunday, October 25 from 4-6 p.m. and the adult-oriented (17+) Captain’s Extreme Show on Friday, November 6 and
Saturday, November 7 from 8 p.m.-1 a.m.

The USS Nightmare is located at 101b Riverboat Row in Newport, near Newport on the Levee and across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati. The USS Nightmare has limited free parking available near the boat, with additional pay parking available at Newport on the Levee and nearby lots.
