Nearly 1,000 people turned out Friday evening for opening night of the 20th annual Haunted Library at Kenton County Library’s Independence Branch.

The free event features Halloween activities, games and Confectionery Catastrophe, a haunted maze set in an abandoned Vermont candy factory with a mysterious past.
The Haunted Library continues tonight at the Independence Branch, 6-9:30 p.m.
For 20 years, Kenton County Public Library has been giving Northern Kentucky
residents a reason to be afraid of the library after dark.
What began in 2006 has become a Halloween family tradition, transforming the library into a world of eerie encounters, unexpected surprises and spine-tingling adventures.
For its milestone anniversary, Haunted Library invites visitors to uncover the terrifying secrets of a long-abandoned confectionery factory.

This year’s story takes visitors back to 1956, when the rural town of Smoat, Vermont was forced to close its famous candy factory.
Rumors of missing employees, strange experiments, disturbing creatures and a mysterious underground cavern have surrounded the property for decades.
Now, the secrets behind the factory’s closure are waiting to be discovered.
“For 20 years, Haunted Library has brought creativity, imagination and more than a few good scares to our community,” said Dr. Denise Fritsch, executive director of Kenton County Public Library. “We’re excited to celebrate this Halloween tradition and the staff who bring it to life.”
