Northern Kentucky University’s Clayton Portz earned Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American Scholar honors, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced.
Portz, a junior sports business major from Springfield, Ohio, holds a 3.348 grade point average, and he led the team with a 73.03 scoring average over 12 tournaments this season. Fifteen of the 32 rounds he participated in were carded at par or better, and he carded 97 birdies and one eagle. Portz claimed six top-20 performances, including three finishes of seventh or better.
“Clayton works extremely hard in the classroom and on the golf course,” head coach Daryl Landrum said. “He has a great work ethic all of the time. No one deserves this more than him.”
After strong performances at the Wright State Intercollegiate and Tennessee State’s Big Blue Invitational, Portz received back-to-back Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honors. He received his first career weekly award on April 7 after finishing second at Wright State with rounds of 73-73-69 for a three-round total of a 2-over 215.
One week later, he carded an 11-under 205 with scores of 65-70-70 at the Big Blue Invitational to take home third place and claim his second honor. His total score broke NKU’s 54-hole record, and he also topped the program’s 18-hole record with his first-round score (65).
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status, student-athletes must be a junior or senior academically and hold a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA. A total of 206 student-athletes competing at the NCAA Division I level received the honor this year.
In addition to the academic requirements, student-athletes must have competed in at least three full years at the collegiate level and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s rounds. Student-athletes must have a stroke average under 76.0 in Division I. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
