Greenline Salon in Covington isn’t just a place for haircuts and styling. As they approach their second anniversary Feb. 19, the artists at the salon are increasingly becoming a part of the community’s fabric who are getting known for generosity as well as talent.
One of the main ways they are doing this is through community outreach, something that is important to owners Caitie Mix and Ashley Britt. That has taken several forms in the past, but currently the salon is collecting paper goods for the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky, located about three blocks from the Russell Street Greenline location.
“We tried to think of something everybody can be involved with,” said Mix. “It doesn’t have to be a big money donation, you can bring as much or as little as you want.”
“It’s such a small need our clientele can fulfill that they’re in big need of having,” she added. “We like being a more community-driven salon.”
Greenline started collecting goods in January, and had such success they decided to keep doing it “until the weather breaks,” said Mix. The goods they are collecting include but are not limited to paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper, plastic cutlery, and plastic cups. They are also accepting grocery gift cards in small denominations, of $25 or less.
Those are things the shelter can always use, but they aren’t the ones people often think of when making donations.
“They have been super appreciative,” said Mix.
For each donation, Greenline is giving away an entry into a raffle for hair and skin products from Aveda and for services. Mix estimates the winning entry will have a $150 value.
This isn’t the first time Greenline has helped out the community. Last year they had a Cuts for Cops promotion where the artists donated their time to give free haircuts to police officers and their immediate families. The event was such a success Mix said they are planning to do it again this year, although a date has yet to be determined.
They also raffled off a rain barrel last April for Earth Month, and will be doing so again this year. The barrel was designed by BLDG, the Covington-based creative agency, and helped Greenline raise nearly $2,000 for the Sierra Club. Mix said she is hoping to raise closer to $3,000 this April.
