Northern Kentucky University junior Clayton Portz has been tabbed the Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Player of the Week after a sensational performance at the Wright State Intercollegiate April 6-7 in Dayton, Ohio.
“Clayton played outstanding on a very tough course,” said head coach Daryl Landrum. ” He has become a good, solid and consistent player for us.”
After opening the tournament with consecutive 2-over-par 73 rounds, Portz carded a final-round 69 to vault five spots from a tie for seventh into sole possession of second place. He finished just two strokes out of first after making up four strokes over the final 18 holes
A native of Springfield, Ohio (Kenton Ridge), Portz leads the Norse in scoring at 72.81 strokes per round.
He also joins Zach Wright as the only Norse with two top-10 finishes and teammate Phoenix Ramsey with a top-5 showing this season.
This marks just the second weekly honor for a Norse golfer as Corey Richmond picked up the accolade on October 10, 2012, after winning the Bearcat Invitational in a play-off.
Northern Kentucky will head to Nashville, Tennessee, for the Big Blue Intercollegiate on April 13-14. Tennessee State will host the event at Hermitage Golf Course.
The event will serve as the final tune-up for NKU before heading off to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship from April 19-21.
