A year ago, most people had not heard of the acronym ISIS or didn’t know what it represented. Today, ISIS – or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria – is a regular part of daily news reports, articles, and feeds. Still, few people know much about the Islamic State, beyond it being a terrorist group. For some Northern Kentucky University students, that will change this summer.
NKU is offering a five-week online course to enhance knowledge and understanding about ISIS and other terrorist groups.
The terrorism class is part of the NKU Master of Public Administration curriculum and will concentrate on the theoretical essentials of terrorism and their applications to counterterrorism at the local, state, national, and international levels. The three-credit graduate-level course will run from July 6 through August 8.
The class will be taught by Marcos Misis, an assistant professor of criminal justice at NKU who is originally from Spain. Misis received his doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi after a lengthy career in military and private security in Madrid.
Misis has research expertise and experience in terrorism, homeland security, and law enforcement. He is currently working on several research projects, one of which focuses on citizens’ fears of terrorism and how Robert Agnew’s criminological theory can explain ethno-nationalist terrorism. Other research includes the views of police officers on the terrorist threat in the United States.
The terrorism class is being offered as part of the Homeland Security and Emergency Management area of concentration in the NKU MPA program. The MPA is an applied 39-semester-hour degree designed to prepare and advance careers in the public and nonprofit sectors. The program will also offer an online course on homeland security in the fall.
Current NKU graduate students can register without submitting a new application. Those not currently admitted as an NKU graduate student must apply to the university as a non-degree-seeking student and submit official transcripts from any colleges and universities they have attended.
