The Boone County Historical Society will dedicate its eighth historic marker in a public ceremony on September 24 at Boone County’s Sperti Park.
The marker will honor famed research scientist Dr. George Speri Sperti.
The dedication will be a 2 p.m. at the park, also knows as Gunpowder Creek Nature Park in Burlington.
Refreshments will be provided following the ceremony. Carpooling is strongly advised.
Dr. Sperti (1900 – 1991) was born in Covington, but loved his Boone County farm.
He invented Preparation H hemorrhoid medication, the Sperti Ultraviolet Lamp, Aspercreme for arthritis relief, and other pharmaceutical products.
Dr. Sperti graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1923, was named Director of the U.C. Research Laboratory, and was the holder of 127 patents, the money from which he donated to U.C. and the Institutum Divi-Thomae which he co-founded in 1935 with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, to research cancer.
Sperti Park, adjacent to the farm where Dr. Sperti lived and conducted many of his experiments, consists of 122 wooded acres and features a rough 1800s logging trail that ends at Gunpowder Creek, as well as a stand of mature oaks on the northern hillside that is one of the best remaining undisturbed areas of woodland in the region. The recently -built shelter features restrooms, electricity, water fountain and play- ground. Parking is limited.
The Dr. Sperti marker is the eighth historic marker sponsored by the Boone County Historical Society, Inc. since 2012.
Directions to the event: From Burlington Courthouse intersection, go south on East Bend Rd./KY338 approx. 1 mile; turn left on Hanover Blvd., turn right on Sperti Lane.
