Northern Kentucky University will offer members of the University community and the public the chance to make a corner of campus their own this spring and summer.
NKU will create a community garden thanks to a “Color in our Community” grant from the Campbell County Cooperative Extension Service. Chartwells, the University’s dining services provider, will provide a variety of seeds to gardeners free of charge.
Ten plots of land will be available at NKU, and individuals as well as community groups are encouraged to apply.
“We hope that the garden helps connect our campus with our friends and neighbors in the community,” said Tess Phinney, NKU Sustainability Manager. “It is completely free, and gardening is something that anyone can do. We hope that people embrace it.”
The garden will be located near the historic log cabin on Nunn Drive at the main entrance to campus. It will open in April, joining a network of existing gardens in the Highland Heights area.
Applications are due by Feb. 29, and orientation classes will be held in March at the Campbell County Cooperative Extension in Highland Heights. Those who adopt the plots must be available to tend them, including during the summer months.
