On their team’s third possession in overtime, Dixie Heights quarterback Joey Bricking completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Aubrey Carter that gave the Colonels a 37-34 win over Simon Kenton in a Class 4A district game on Saturday, Sept 24, 2006.
It was the third touchdown pass of the game for Bricking, who also scored on a 1-yard run. Late in the fourth quarter, he connected with E.J. Detmer on a 31-yard TD pass and Mitchell Jett kicked the extra-point to tie the score, 21-21, and send the game into overtime.
On their first two overtime possessions from the 10-yard line, each of the teams scored a touchdown and kicked a field goal. After Simon Kenton took a 34-31 lead on another field goal, Carter caught the game-winning pass from Bricking.
“The play was designed for a slant (pattern), but I was just trying to get open and help my team win this game,” Carter said. “He was playing me inside so I jumped outside and (the pass) was right there.”
The game started on Friday night and Dixie Heights had a 14-7 when it was suspended at halftime because of lightning and heavy rain. The win helped put the the Colonels get to the Class 4A playoffs, but they lost to Ryle in the first round.
