Football Flashback: Junior running back’s second touchdown maintained perfect record for Simon Kenton team

Simon Kenton remained undefeated after junior running back Dillion Powell scored his second touchdown on a 4-yard run late in the fourth quarter to give the Pioneers a 27-21 win over Boone County on Friday, Oct. 10 2014.

Powell, who scored the game’s first touchdown on a 15-yard run, finished with 128 rushing yards on 15 carries in his team’s seventh consecutive victory. Sophomore quarterback Cameron Racke had a combined total of 164 yards (83 passing, 81 rushing) and threw two TD passes to senior Logan Winkler.

Simon Kenton finished with an 11-2 record. Both losses were to Dixie Heights, the Class 6A state runner-up that season.

Dillion ended up rushing for 1,519 yards and 16 touchdowns even though he missed two games due to an injury. Racke passed for 1,897 yards and 21 TDs.

After his senior season in 2015, Dillion was named Division I Player of the Year by local coaches and nominated for the That’s My Boy Award that goes to the top student-athlete in Northern Kentucky high school football each year.

Dillion graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine last May and applied for residency programs in both family medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Here’s a look back at other Northern Kentucky high school football games played between Oct. 6-12 over the last five decades.

Friday, Oct. 9, 1987 — On their team’s overtime possession, Newport tight end Tony Caraway caught a touchdown pass and 2-point conversion pass from quarterback Bobby Meyer to defeat Highlands, 28-27, in a Class 3A district game. Meyer, who had only three TD passes in the Wildcats’ first seven wins, threw for three TDs and a pair of 2-point conversions against the Bluebirds.

John Schlarman was Campbell County’s head coach in 2003 and 2004.

Friday, Oct. 8, 1999 — Bellevue posted its first win over Beechwood in nine years with a 17-0 shutout. Bellevue’s defense held Beechwood to 166 total yards with senior linebacker Joey Grainger getting a team-high eight tackles, including a quarterback sack. The winning team’s two touchdowns came on a 10-yard pass from Nate Berkley to Sonny Rechtin and 3-yard run by James Delaney.

Friday, Oct. 8, 2004 — Steven Brown’s 6-yard touchdown run with six seconds left in the third quarter was the deciding score in Campbell County’s 14-7 win over Scott. Late in the fourth quarter, the Camels intercepted a pass on their 30-yard line to stop Scott’s bid for a tying touchdown. Campbell County finished 5-5 in its second season under head coach John Schlarman, who later became the University of Kentucky’s offensive line coach.

Friday, Oct. 6, 2023 — A 23-yard field goal by Ryle senior Josh Line in overtime gave his team a 37-36 win over Campbell County in the first Class 6A district game of the season for both teams. The Raiders, who snapped a three-game losing streak with the one-point victory, finished with a 381-252 advantage in total yards. Senior quarterback Logan Verax completed 35 of 49 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns.
