Kentucky Retailers ready to help families find value during back-to-school shopping season

Kentucky families are already checking items off their back-to-school shopping lists, and retailers across the Commonwealth are prepared with competitive prices, promotions and a wide selection of products to help stretch household budgets.

According to the National Retail Federation’s annual Back-to-School Shopping Survey conducted with Prosper Insights & Analytics, spending on K-12 back-to-school shopping is expected to reach a record $43.3 billion this year, while spending for college students is projected to total $103.5 billion. More than six in 10 shoppers had already begun purchasing school supplies by early July, continuing the trend of consumers shopping earlier than ever.

While shoppers are getting a head start, affordability remains the top concern. Nearly eight in 10 parents expect to encounter higher prices this school season, leading many families to compare prices, seek promotions and spread purchases throughout the summer.

“Kentucky retailers understand that back-to-school shopping is one of the biggest expenses families face each year,” said Tod Griffin, president of the Kentucky Retail Federation. “Our members are working hard to provide exceptional value through competitive pricing, seasonal promotions and knowledgeable customer service. Whether families are shopping for basic school supplies, clothing, electronics or dorm essentials, Kentucky retailers are committed to helping them find the products they need at prices that fit their budgets.”

Retailers are responding by offering extended promotions throughout the season, allowing families greater flexibility to shop when it makes the most sense for their finances. Many consumers are also taking advantage of early sales events and continuing to shop into August as they receive school supply lists and search for the best deals.

The survey also found that shoppers are increasingly supporting local businesses. Approximately 17 percent of K-12 shoppers say they plan to purchase back-to-school items from local or small businesses — a record high for the survey.

“Independent retailers continue to play an important role in communities across Kentucky,” Griffin said. “Local retailers offer personalized service, unique merchandise and the convenience that busy families appreciate during the back-to-school season. Every purchase made at a Kentucky business helps strengthen local economies, supports jobs and keeps dollars circulating in our communities.”

As technology continues to become a larger part of education, electronics remain a significant back-to-school expense, particularly for college students. At the same time, clothing, footwear, school supplies and classroom essentials continue to account for a substantial share of family spending.

Kentucky Retail Federation encourages shoppers to compare prices, take advantage of promotions throughout the season and support local retailers whenever possible.

“Back-to-school shopping is about much more than buying supplies,” Griffin added. “It’s about preparing students for a successful school year while supporting the businesses that invest in our communities every day. Kentucky retailers are ready to help families make the most of every dollar.”
