Sanitation District No. 1 has once again been recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) with the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, the organization’s highest honor for governmental accounting and financial reporting.
The award, the 13th consecutive received by SD1, recognizes the utility’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025. The report was evaluated by an independent panel and found to meet the program’s rigorous standards for transparency, accuracy and full disclosure.
“The Certificate of Achievement reflects our commitment to responsible financial stewardship and open, transparent reporting,” said Ron Schmitt, SD1 Director of Finance. “Our customers and stakeholders deserve confidence that the resources entrusted to us are being managed wisely. This recognition demonstrates our commitment to accountability and to providing financial information that is both accurate and easy to understand.”
The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. It is awarded only to organizations whose ACFR clearly communicates their financial position while meeting the highest standards established by the GFOA.
SD1’s report includes audited financial statements prepared in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and standards established by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board. The report provides customers, bondholders, regulators and the public with a comprehensive overview of the utility’s financial condition and operational performance.
“This recognition belongs to our entire Finance Department, especially Accounting Manager Melissa Lusk and the outstanding accounting team,” Schmitt said. “Their professionalism, attention to detail and dedication throughout the year make this achievement possible. Preparing an award-winning ACFR is never the work of one person. It requires teamwork across the organization, and I am grateful to everyone who contributes to maintaining SD1’s high standards of financial integrity.”
