Brossart’s volleyball team remained undefeated and earned a return trip to the All “A” Classic state tournament with a pair of victories on Saturday.
The Mustangs won the 10th Region All “A” Classic championship with wins over Paris, 2-1, in the semifinals and Bracken County, 2-0, in the title match that raised their perfect record to 13-0.
This is the eighth consecutive year that Brossart has advanced to the small school state tournament to be played Friday and Saturday at Owensboro Convention Center.
Pool play Friday will decide pairings for championship and bronze single-elimination brackets on Saturday. The 16-team field includes defending state champion Beechwood, winner of the 9th Region title.
Brossart senior setter Aubrey Rebholz was named most valuable player on the 10th Region all-tournament team. The other Brossart nominees were senior middle hitter Callie Ritter and junior libero Grace Frommeyer.
Brossart has matches scheduled against Harrison County on Tuesday and Walton-Verona on Wednesday before leaving for the All “A” Classic state tournament. The Mustangs are looking to become the first 10th Region team to win the small school state title. Teams from the 9th Region have won 11 of the last 15 state championships.
St. Henry sweeps All “A” Classic sectional soccer matches
The St. Henry girls soccer team defeated two-time defending All “A” Classic state champion Brossart, 2-1, in a penalty kick shootout in the sectional round of this year’s state tournament on Saturday.
St. Henry (10-2-1) advances to the eight-team state finals to be played Sept. 25-27 at Louisville Collegiate. In their last two state tournament appearances, the Crusaders made it to the semifinals in 2023 and won the title in 2019.
St. Henry junior Anna Bain’s goal in the 63rd minute of Saturday’s sectional match tied the score at 1-1. The Crusaders won the penalty kick shootout, 4-1, on goals by Ava Waymeyer, Anna Yuskewich, Bello O’Neill and Mady Lux.
The St. Henry boys soccer team won its All “A” Classic sectional match against Calvary Christian, 7-0, on Saturday to earn a state tournament berth for the first time since 2019.
Sophomore midfielder Leo Bowen had two goals and two assists in the victory that raised the Crusaders’ record to 6-2. Junior goalkeeper Landon Schuler made three saves to post a shutout.
The All “A” Classic girls state soccer tournament will begin Friday, Sept. 25 with four opening-round and two semifinal matches scheduled that day. The first six matches of the boys tournament will be played Saturday, Sept. 26. Championship matches will be played Sunday, Sept. 27 with the girls at 11 a.m. and boys at 1 p.m.
Highlands upsets Notre Dame in girls soccer showdown
There should be some changes in this week’s Kentucky girls high school soccer coaches poll after Highlands upset Notre Dame, 1-0, on Saturday in a match between the 9th Region powers.
In last week’s state rankings, Notre Dame was No. 2 and Highlands was No. 16. The Bluebirds got a goal from sophomore Ally Lickert and shutout performance by junior goalkeeper Bailee Class to pull off the upset.
Last year, Highlands defeated Notre Dame, 1-0, in the 9th Region championship match with the Lickert getting the lone goal and Class in the net. The Bluebirds went on to claim the state runner-up trophy in the postseason playoffs.
Highlands and Notre Dame are the only teams that have won 9th Region titles in girls soccer over the last 14 years. After eight-team region brackets were introduced in 2012, Notre Dame won the first six region titles. Over the last eight years, however, Highlands won six titles and Notre Dame won the other two.
